Abstract/Summary

DBA to support a planning application. Roman archaeological evidence within this area has been limited to scattered remains of inhumations and cremations. The majority of these were discovered in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Modern archaeological investigations have failed to identify intact Roman funerary remains. During the medieval period the site lay within a broader agricultural landscape and this situation continued into the post-medieval period. Features of medieval to post-medieval date are likely to be limited to agricultural field boundaries, together with ploughsoils and possibly truncated ridge and furrow. From the 19th century features associated with the brickmaking industry may be present and it is possible that this industry may also be reflected in evidence for earlier periods. The site is also likely to contain evidence for the early 20th century railway and associated features, such as tanks, may be present. The use of the site during the 19th and 20th centuries is likely to have lead to a degree of truncation of earlier deposits.
