Abstract/Summary

MAP Archaeological Practice carried out an Archaeological Watching Brief in May and June 2017 at Garage Court, Agar Street, York in advance of a proposed residential development. Large areas of the site had been disturbed by modern garages which were demolished prior to the commencement of the watching brief. Land drains, modern drainage and manholes were also present on the site, particularly to the south close to Love Lane. Archaeological deposits were identified at approximately 2m below present ground level. Roman pottery and animal bone was recovered from the site, particularly in the north-east corner where a possible linear was identified. A small assemblage of pottery and ceramic building material, predominantly dating to the early to mid-2nd century, was recovered alongside a moderate assemblage of animal bone consisting mainly of cattle and horse.
