Title York Racecourse West Enclosure
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2017

Abstract/Summary

Building recording of part of the West Enclosure of the York Racecourse, running north-south from the central Clock Tower building. The enclosure is located opposite (to the west) of the other spectator stands and within the ring of the track. The West Enclosure contains several buildings including the listed Clock Tower and Indicator Board (Grade II) and smaller structures such as the entrance turnstiles and toilet blocks. The two wings that form part of this investigation are long linear developments made up of six blocks, that were designed to house totalisers, restaurant and bar facilities with bathrooms in the two end blocks. The areas proposed for demolition are to the very end of each of the wings, the rest being subject to refurbishment. Today the end blocks still house bathroom facilities. The recording is therefore confined to the two areas approved for demolition, and also includes the modern canopy that has been added to the western elevation of the central four blocks.
