Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd, during December 2002 and January 2003, at Hob Moor County Junior School, York, on behalf of the City of York Council. A total of ten trenches were excavated, predominantly within existing playing fields. The surface of the playing fields includes well-preserved earthworks representing a medieval ridge and furrow field system. The excavated trenches encountered a number of furrows, which had formed parts of this field system, from which later 12th to early 13th century pottery was recovered. Smaller assemblages of later medieval and post-medieval finds were collected suggesting the continued agricultural use of the land over a number of centuries. Limited evidence for land organisation, in the form of ditches, was found, which pre-dated the extant ridge and furrow system. These earlier ditches were also of medieval date.
