Abstract/Summary

An archaeological investigation was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd during redevelopment at 95 – 97 Micklegate, York. The redevelopment involved ground reduction within both of the properties. It became apparent that archaeological deposits and features survived directly below the concrete floors, particularly within the northwestern part of 95 Micklegate. Fortunately, the developer’s formation level was close to the surface of the exposed archaeological remains. The investigation involved mapping, recording and limited excavation of archaeological deposits exposed after floor reduction within the footprints of the two properties. The archaeological investigation has identified a sequence of archaeological remains within the footprints of 95 – 97 Micklegate that probably date from the later medieval to post-medieval, early modern periods. The majority of activity was identified within 95 Micklegate and clearly demonstrated that structural elements of earlier buildings were present prior to the construction of the extant buildings.
