Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was carried out by On-Site Archaeology during the excavation of foundation trenches for a new dwelling on land at Spring Well, Deighton, York. The watching brief was carried out in response to a condition attached to a grant of planning permission. The watching brief found the remains of two features. One was the remains of a pond first shown on a map of 1851 and backfilled in the mid-twentieth century. The second was a large feature of uncertain form and extent, possibly a pond or natural water feature, that had been backfilled in the 16th century and incorporated artefacts of Roman, early medieval and later medieval date.
