Abstract/Summary

The site lies in an area with the potential to contain archaeological remains of prehistoric, Romano-British and early medieval date, although a programme of evaluation trenching on the site had indicated that a significant degree of truncation had taken place in association with previous, 20th century development of the site. The new building is to be constructed using piled foundations. The watching brief was therefore carried out, following demolition, during groundworks required for the installation of a pile mat and for the redirection of a main sewer. The watching brief confirmed that the degree of truncation indicated in the evaluation was severe and no pre-20th century deposits had survived.Former Fordlands House, 1 Fordlands Road
