Date/Year 1991
City of York Interference Index 0009

Abstract/Summary

A series of five evaluation trenches demonstrated that archaeological levels survive to remarkably high levels over much of the site. Even where riverside basements had been cut into the surface, only late material had been removed. The tops of walls and other features were encountered on the riverward side of the site. These may have related to the medieval river frontage. A succession of dumps was found on the landward side of the site. Post-medieval structural remains encountered were the pre-Victorian vicarage for the church of St Martin and evidence for an adjacent cobbled lane, located close to the surface.
