In February 2019 York Archaeological Trust prepared a desk-based assessment and recommendations for further investigation for a site at Heworth Gas Works, York (SE 61144 52531). The work was undertaken for Aspect 4 Limited. The assessment has shown that the site offers the potential to yield evidence for Roman burials, but it is unlikely that there will be significant remains of 5th to 19th century date present. The remains of the gas works will be present across the western half of the site. Any further investigation will be constrained by industrial contamination across this site. A borehole survey is recommended as the safest means of refining the baseline information.
