Abstract/Summary

DBA south of designer outlet. Previous investigations within the Site recorded significant archaeological remains in the form of a Roman sarcophagus burial. The burial has been typologically dated to the 3rd to 4th century AD, and the skeletal remains encased in gypsum and interned in a stone coffin represent a high status burial. Whilst this feature was identified in isolation through rescue excavations during construction works, it is possible that further associated archaeological remains occur within the Site. Furthermore, cropmarks recorded in the vicinity of the Site are indicative of buried archaeological remains relating to a late prehistoric and/or Romano- British field system, and it is possible that associated archaeological remains occur within the Site. From the medieval period onwards, the Site appears to have formed part of the historic agricultural hinterland of York. Whilst the potential archaeological remains that could occur within the Site are unlikely to be of such significance as to influence or preclude development, further archaeological works are likely to be required prior to any development works.
