Date/Year 2019

Abstract/Summary

An archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out by On-Site Archaeology in August 2019 within the footprint of a proposed new dwelling. The evaluation has demonstrated that the uppermost 1m of deposits located within the footprint of the proposed new cottage are all likely to date to the post-medieval period to the 20th century. Probably medieval agricultural soils are present beneath the later deposits and these extend to a depth of approximately 1.50m below the modern ground surface. This represented the earliest deposit revealed in the evaluation. The 17th and 18th century maps of the area all show the land to the rear of Bootham / Marygate to be undeveloped open agricultural land and this presumably also reflects the medieval situation.
