Abstract/Summary

The site lies approximately 250m to the east of the line of Roman Road 10, approaching the city from the southwest. Roman burials have been found along the line of this road, as have features indicative of roadside settlement. However, investigations carried out at similar distances from the line of the road as the current site have generally revealed ditches suggestive of associated agricultural landuse. Therefore it seems likely that if Roman period archaeological remains are present on the site then they would be limited to similar field systems. The agricultural landuse of the site is much more easily confirmed for the medieval period, due to the presence of ridge and furrow earthworks. The surviving earthworks form a relatively small area of what would have been a much more extensive medieval field system and have themselves become degraded. Aerial photographs dating from the first half of the 20th century, (pre-dating the majority of development in this area) indicate that such field systems were widespread. Much of the former ridge and furrow in the surrounding area has now been built upon, or truncated by more recent agricultural practices.
