Source/Archive record SYO2480 - Shipton by Beningbrough Bypass

Title Shipton by Beningbrough Bypass
Author/Originator
Date/Year 1993

Abstract/Summary

documentary evidence for the historical development was sparse, and the area was characterised by post medieval enclosure. A possible pre-Conquest settlement to the north of the village, perhaps associated with an eliptical area of land demarked by field boundaries. The line of a Roman road may run through the area. The first stage of evaluation to the north of Shipton indicated possible prehistoric occupation and an area of possible iindustrial activity. The resistivity detected an anomaly that may be associated with the Roman road whereas the gradiometer failed to locate cut features, but did detect a circular feature near the area of prehistoric activity.
