Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was carried out on land at Wheelbase Yard, Clarence Street, York in advance of a proposed extension to an existing building by Courtesy Shoes Ltd. Two trenches measuring 3m x 3m were excavated to a depth of 1~5m~ from the present ground surface~ With the exception of a small amount of ~most likely~ residual Roman maten~al~ the stratigraphy and finds encountered were 16th century or more recent in date~ A selection of ceramics ~rims~ bases and decorated pieces~ were retained and these have been presented to the Yorkshire Museum ~Accession Code YORYM~~ 1993~322. Other finds deposited included a poorly preserved medieval silver half penny or farthing and an iron knife~ blade In the absence of sealed or otherwise wefl stratified layers no other finds were retained.
