Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief and excavation undertaken during the construction of a lift pit in the basement of 28-29 High Ousegate, York revealed well preserved deposits of medieval, Anglo-Scandinavian and Roman date. Finds, including a number of textile fragments, leather objects and a Frisian bone comb, were retrieved from a series of pits of Anglo-Scandinavian date. The pottery sequence included a considerable quantity of Roman material, much of it residual. Timber posts and wattle were also recovered.
