Title Updated Archaeological Baseline DBA, Hungate
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2015

Abstract/Summary

The DBA reviewed the findings from the work at Hungate prior to further excavation. The DBA determined that there was no in-situ Prehistoric archaeology. Substantial in-situ Roman archaeology has been encountered in Block H, it is absent in Block D and survives at considerable depth in the Block G area. The Roman archaeology represents river side use and land division superseded by a cremation and inhumation cemetery. Roman archaeology is likely to be directly encountered in Block H and not at all in Block D. Roman archaeology is likely to survive in both Block F and Block G, at considerable depth. No in-situ Anglian/Anglo-Saxon archaeology has been encountered in the Study Area except for a relic plough soil. The relic plough soil is likely to be encountered in Blocks D and H and due to preservation at depth it is unlikely to be encountered in Blocks F and G. Substantial in-situ Anglo-Scandinavian archaeology relating to the domestic evolution of Jorvik has been encountered throughout the Study Area (although not in Block F). Some of this archaeology has been shown to survive in waterlogged conditions. It is highly likely the Anglo-Scandinavian archaeology survives in-situ across the whole of the Study Area. Anglo-Scandinavian archaeology is likely to be directly encountered during the Block D and Block H developments. Substantial in-situ later medieval archaeology relating to the evolution of the Hungate space, riverside activity and religious institutions has been encountered throughout both the Study Area and the immediate vicinity around the Study Area. It is highly likely that in-situ later medieval archaeology survives across the whole of the Study Area. Later medieval archaeology is likely to be directly encountered during the Block D and Block H developments. Substantial in-situ Post-Reformation and Post-Medieval archaeology relating to horticultural land use has been encountered throughout the area. In addition the late 16th Century Company of Cordwainer’s guildhall was encountered in the southern segment of Block H. It is highly likely that in-situ Post-Medieval archaeology survives across the whole of the Study Area and is likely to be directly encountered in Blocks D and H. Substantial in-situ Early Modern, Industrial and Modern archaeology relating to the evolution of the Hungate urban neighbourhood and the industrial development of the River Foss from the late 18th Century through to the 20th Century has been encountered throughout the Study Area. It is highly likely that in-situ Early Modern, Industrial and Modern archaeology survives across the whole of the Study Area and is likely to be encountered in all development blocks. In Blocks D, H and G this archaeology is likely to be domestic in character and in Block F it is likely to be industrial in character.
