Abstract/Summary

Museum Gardens is a designated Park and Garden located in the centre of the City of York. Within the grounds are a number of scheduled ancient monuments. This work is done with the collaboration with Department of Archaeology, University of York, and the Yorkshire Museum. The aim of the survey envelops the understanding of the sub-surface remains within the garden to aid in historical interpretation and practical management of the site. The majority of the areas surveyed in 2022 are negatively impacted by the presence of underground services, and so it is difficult to tell from the new survey the likely survival of archaeological features in these areas. However, results from the 2022 season have mostly identified large areas of disturbance from underground utilities, but an area around the abbey ruins shows some likely structural remains in alignment with the abbey buildings, and there is the indication of possible remains near the observatory.
