Abstract/Summary

York Archaeology was commissioned by PRH Electrical Limited to undertake an archaeological watching brief at Shambles Kitchen. The monitored groundworks comprised the excavation of a deep trench in order to locate an existing electric cable. Fieldwork was carried out on 19th of October 2022. The natural geology was not reached during the watching brief. The earliest deposit encountered below ground level (BGL) was a mid-yellowish brown coarse sand deposit. During the excavation works a small void was uncovered and plastic service markers were visible suggesting that the area of the watching brief is further impacted by modern services. No archaeological remains were encountered during the watching brief at 28 Shambles. The deposits encountered were of modern date, deposited to backfill underground services and level the existing street surface.
