Abstract/Summary

On 15th June 2022 York Archaeological Trust conducted a photographic survey of the churchyard wall at St Saviour’s Church, St Saviourgate, which was followed by the excavation of three pier footings at the same site. The work was undertaken to fulfil the planning conditions as set out by City of York Council. The works involved the description and photographic recording of the boundary wall between St Saviour’s churchyard and a plot of land to the south-east of the church off Hungate. Following this, the excavation and recording of three trenches for the placement of pier footings was carried out. The current photographic survey records a part of the St Saviour’s churchyard wall, revealed possible wall and chimney scars apparent on the churchyard wall. These probably represent structural elements from the buildings backing onto the churchyard wall as depicted on the 1852 historic mapping. The trenches excavated in advance of the new foundation piers uncovered evidence for medieval deposits and structures.
