Source/Archive record SYO2958 - 36 Coney Street, York

Title 36 Coney Street, York
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2022/2023

Abstract/Summary

The DBA/HBA includled a visual inspection of the fabric of the buildings, consultation of published resources, archival searches and historic map regression. The timber-framed building dates to 1397-1420, confirmed by dendrochronology, with a fragment of replacement roof likely to date to the 17th century. Although other interpretations are possible, the balance of evidence points to the building being constructed by one of the numerous medieval landlords that owned property in ‘Coneystreet’ such as the Ousebridgemasters' estate who rented out 20 tenements. Located to the rear of the property plot, the tenement is a rare surviving example of housing that would have been common in medieval York.
