Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd at Principal Hotel, Station Road, York, during installation of external plant for an air conditioning system. The investigation comprised the archaeological monitoring of excavations for five stanchion foundation pits. The only deposits that were encountered consisted of levelling debris and drainage associated with the construction of the hotel during the late 19th century. The area of investigation was located at basement level (some c.2m below current street level) suggesting substantial ground reduction during construction that had resulted in the destruction of any former land surfaces along with any potential archaeology that may have existed.
