Abstract/Summary
A watching brief on ground works for a utilities trench was undertaken by York Archaeology behalf of O’Connor Utilities between 18th and 19th June at 5 College Street and 6 Deangate. The majority of deposits encountered during the works appear to be modern in origin with the occasional late 19th century service, however monitoring did reveal a structure which may have reused earlier material suggesting possible earlier archaeological features.
The possible wall consisting of three blocks of masonry on College St is likely to be post medieval in date, possibly reusing medieval stone blocks from another building. On Deangate the foundation wall for current no.6 is the earliest deposit noted. Evidence points to this being of late 19th or early 20th
century in date, similar to when Deangate itself was established.
