Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd, between July and August 2024, during groundworks at Main Road, Nether Popppleton, York. The watching brief was undertaken to monitor enabling works prior to the construction of a new water storage shaft. The investigation comprised the monitoring of topsoil stripping of an area for a haul road and compound followed by the machine excavation of a large area for the construction of the storage shaft. A single large pit, that was not fully visible within Trench 2, and two possible linears were the only archaeological features identified. Medieval pottery was found within the pit and a single fragment of medieval CBM (ceramic building material) was found in one of the possible linears. These features appear to be isolated on the edge of the medieval settlement of Poppleton.
