Abstract/Summary
A watching brief during test pitting at the site of a proposed housing development on land to the rear of Willow House, Long Close Lane, York. The work followed an archaeological evaluation and geotechnical investigations that were carried out by York Archaeology in 2024 (YA 2024) which were designed to inform a planning application for the development.
Three test pits were excavated next to the retaining wall which separated the site from the City Wall embankment. The test pit excavation was designed to inspect the foundations of the retaining wall. Deposits relating to the construction of the retaining wall and some associated modern garages were encountered in Test Pits 2 and 3. A possible buried subsoil and topsoil were exposed in Test Pit 1. No finds were recovered from any of the deposits encountered.
