Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site-Archaeology Ltd at land to the rear of Mill House, North Street, York. The groundworks involved monitoring the construction of foundation bases for a new electricity sub-station (Trench 1), four foundation bases for EV charging points (Trenches 2, 3, 4 and 6), electricity box terminal/feeder pillar (Trench 5) and an electrical cable connection trench (Trench 7). The investigation revealed medieval deposits within Trenches 1, 4, 5 and 7 that comprised of possible soil horizons or dumping deposits and a stone foundation/wall (in Trench 7). The remainder of deposits identified during the investigation comprised of a levelling probably created during the post-medieval or early modern periods followed by the construction of later 19th century red brick buildings and early 20th century concrete structures. The investigation identified in-situ medieval deposits within the area of development at levels of 9.62m AOD to the west and 8.5m AOD to the east with structural remains surviving to a maximum height of c.8.84m AOD to the east close to the North Street frontage. Whilst medieval archaeology has been identified during the investigation relatively little of this was disturbed by the groundworks, which were predominantly shallow enough to only impact later deposits.
