Abstract/Summary
Archaeological Services WYAS were commissioned by Prospect Archaeology to undertake an archaeological watching brief at 75-79 Clarence Street, York. The works involved the monitoring of the excavation of service and foundation trenches ahead of the construction of student accommodation.
No archaeological features predating the post-medieval period were present. The deposits exposed during the watching brief demonstrated a sequence of recent ground levelling events and a partial post-medieval or early modern brick-built well.
A few fragments of human bone, likely associated with a nearby Roman inhumation cemetery, were found redeposited in a much later context.
