Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at 77 Walmgate during groundworks associated with development works. The investigation recorded made ground deposits abutting the northwest-facing boundary wall and associated ancillary structures, along with a cobbled surface, confirming the presence of 19th–20th-century yard development. Pottery recovered from the made ground provided a date range spanning the 16th–19th centuries, with the primary deposit formed during the mid-19th to early 20th century, corresponding with documented phases of urban remodelling. The results confirm 19th-century yard remodelling followed by later 20th-century alterations to the rear of the property. Although no earlier archaeological horizons were reached during the monitored works, the depth of made ground indicates that earlier deposits are likely to survive at depth, potentially preserving stratified sequences relating to earlier phases of occupation on the site.
