Abstract/Summary
Rocket Environmental Services Ltd was commissioned by the client, Hessay Solar
Limited to undertake an archaeological evaluation of land near to Hessay, York, YO26 8JT
(centred NGR SE 53199 52547). The programme of works was undertaken in accordance
with the approved Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI), which was agreed upon with
the City of York Council.
The archaeological works were conducted in response to a planning application
submitted to the City of York Council for the development of an installation of a solar
farm. In addition to the photovoltaic panels, associated infrastructure will include a
substation, inverter/transformers, internal access roads and a perimeter fence.
The archaeological work was undertaken over 37 days between 2 September 2024 and
15 October 2024. A total of 184 trenches were excavated, revealing no significant
archaeology. The only features recorded were a ridge and furrow feature in Trench 33
and a semi-circular cut in Trench 55, neither of which contained any finds.
It is recommended that no further archaeological works are required as part of the
proposed development 23/00626/FULM. The final decision on the appropriateness of this
recommendation lies with the City of York Council.
