Date/Year 2025

Abstract/Summary

Between the 1st August and the 28th September 2022, York Archaeology (YA) conducted an archaeological watching brief at Queen Street, York (SE 59612 51573). The work was undertaken for Howard Civil Engineering on behalf of York City Council to fulfil a planning condition that was under consideration (19/00535/FULM). The work was based on a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) produced by YA (Appendix 4) and involved the monitoring and recording of two long trenches prior to the insertion of electrical cabling. Archaeological deposits were encountered along the length of the trenches. These included two Roman inhumation burials in the north and north-east of the site, as well as medieval and Roman deposits, particularly in the south and south-east of site. An assessment report on the findings was compiled in 2023, which recommended additional analysis on selected finds types. This report combines the initial assessment report with these extra analyses.
