York Historic Environment Record

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by On-Site-Archaeology Ltd at the Site of 6 Compton Street, York, prior to the development of residential dwellings. The evaluation revealed an agricultural horizon of either a Roman or medieval date succeeded by a later phase of agricultural activity represented by a furrow potentially of a mid-11th – mid-12th century date. A later phase of post hole digging of a probable medieval or post-medieval date was also recorded. The last phase of activity included 19th or 20th century garden soil and construction/demolition debris. The archaeological deposits recorded during the evaluation are of limited archaeological significance.
