Abstract/Summary

York Archaeology (YA) monitored groundworks associated with the uncovering of modern utilities in the footpath outside the site of the Old Tax Office, Piccadilly, York. The monitoring work was undertaken to establish the presence of any archaeological remains, in accordance with the requirements of City of York Council (CYC) and statutory requirements relating to the location of the site with the York Area of Archaeological Importance. The works took place on the 3rd of September 2025 and comprised the monitoring of the machine excavation of a single 1m by 1m pit. Due to the shallow depth of the excavation all archaeological deposits were deemed to be of modern or 19th century date consisting of concrete and tarmac surfaces and footings.
