Between the 16th February and 8th March 2023, Tetra Tech conducted archaeological monitoring during the mitigation of contamination in Area S4 for York Central Phase 1 Infrastructure IP2 works. The archaeological monitoring was based on a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) produced by Tetra Tech as part of the Phase 1 Infrastructure IP2 Draft Detailed Archaeological Remains Management Plan (ARMP) (Tetra Tech 2022) and following discussions with Claire MacRae, the City of York Council (CYC) City Archaeologist. The works involved archaeological monitoring and recording as appropriate. Archaeological observations revealed the wooden base for two separate turntable structures located where mapping had anticipated. In addition, each of the turntables was flanked by the footing for a snatch block and the structure associated with a capstan.
