Abstract/Summary

Between the 7th March 2022 and 12th January 2023 Tetra Tech conducted archaeological monitoring during Ground Investigations (GI) for York Central Phase 1 Infrastructure IP2 works. The GI work was undertaken for John Sisk & Son to help investigate additional geo-environmental and geotechnical ground conditions for the access routes linked with the Phase 1 Infrastructure IP2 works. Monitoring of the works has added further definition to our understanding of the truncated and buried former landscape which was first highlighted in 2018. It has also added to our understanding of the deeper deposit sequence where it survived. The main discoveries during these works include: • The level of survival and construction methodology of the gasometer adjacent to Millennium Green, including a lack of laminated alluvial deposits. • The western area of the sidings contained no laminated alluvial nor organic deposits from a former stream channel, contradicting assumptions in earlier deposit modelling. • Ground reduction at the eastern end of the site was constrained to areas indicated as higher ground on historic mapping, demonstrating that reduction was not a wholesale process across the area. • The slope to the south of the Roman Cemetery, beneath the former raised car park, was steeper than initially anticipated and the lower areas did not include organic deposits, only buried, former ground levels.
