Abstract/Summary
A programme of Historic England Level 1 building recording was undertaken at 22 Coney Street, York, during the replacement of three basement joists.
The basement was found to comprise a heavily modified space, with wall fabric of mixed date and evidence for earlier structural features within the rear wall. The joists were identified as later insertions of
machine-sawn pitch pine, dating to the late 19th to early/mid 20th century, with evidence of a former lath-and-plaster ceiling.
All timbers exhibited significant decay due to damp conditions. No primary timber fabric was identified within the affected area, and the works resulted in the replacement of non-original elements only.
