Abstract/Summary
Between the 20th and the 22nd of September 2021 York Archaeological Trust (YAT) carried out a watching brief at Hopgrove Lane South, Stockton-on-the-Forest, York. The work involved the monitoring and recording of two test pits, two boreholes and eight window samples for a geotechnical and geo-environmental investigation for a new proposed sewer rising main.
The investigations show that glacial deposits are present across the site to a maximum depth of 7m BGL. These glacial deposits are overlain by agricultural soils in some locations and modern made ground up to 1m deep in other areas. No archaeological features, waterlogged, charred or organic deposits were identified during the watching brief. The investigations suggest that apart from disturbance probably related to the construction of the A64 and local road network there has been little modern disturbance of the landscape in this area.
