Title The Mount School
Author/Originator
Date/Year 1998

Abstract/Summary

In May 1998 York Archaeological Trust excavated a series of three trenches as part of an archaeological evaluation of an area presently used as tennis courts at the Mount School, York. Trenches 2 and 3 confirmed the presence of a large hollow at the site thought to be an old quarry. Trench 1 revealed natural deposits directly below the tennis court through which no archaeological features were seen to cut. The evidence of Trench 1, together with the observation that the tennis courts cut into sloping ground, indicate ground reduction. This is thought to have taken place in recent years. It remains a possibility that small areas of archaeological remains may still exist at the site.
