A watching brief was undertaken in order to monitor the excavation of an extension to the kitchen at the rear of number 1 St. Paul’s Square, Holgate. No archaeological cut features were encountered during the course of the watching brief. It would seem that during the construction of this property a quantity of dumped material, derived from the local clay natural, was deposited, probably in an act of levelling. This combined with the truncation from services and the construction cuts for the original outbuildings would have contributed to the absence of archaeological material.
