Title Corner of Clarence St and Lord Mayors Walk
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2006

Abstract/Summary

In March and April 2006 York Archaeological Trust undertook an archaeological and historic desk top study of an area of land at the junction of Lord Mayor’s Walk and Clarence Street. This work was designed to assess the archaeological and historic potential of the site in advance of a planning application by York St John College to redevelop the site. This study has shown the archaeological potential of the area to be generally high although details of the specific site are limited. As currently proposed the redevelopment is likely to seriously damage or completely destroy many of the archaeological deposits on the site, including any Roman stratigraphy which has not been explored in any detail and is poorly understood in this part of York. Should the development, as currently proposed, proceed a mitigation strategy will be essential.
