Description

One of a series of watching briefs carried out in March and April 1997 on the refurbishment of a sewer in Low Petergate. For summary see EYO137. In this trench (5) a substantial stone wall running north-west / south-east, parallel to the line of the via principalis, was found. The wall stood l.l0m high above its clay and cobble foundations. Based on what is known and conjectured about the plan of the fortress in this area, it is suggested that the wall lay c.7.5m north-east of the via principalis, the space between them being occupied largely by a covered portico. Analogy with most other stone buildings in the fortress suggests that the wall dates to the mid 2nd century (INTERIM 1997).
