Description

Fieldwork was undertaken on 17th June 2002, which was a dry and sunny day. Maps were used to identify the marshy, low-lying areas of the Ings, which are flooded most frequently and for the longest duration. A Russian corer, of length 500 mm, was used to take cores from two locations about 1 m apart . A GPS supplied a grid reference (SE 60697)[sic] and an elevation (7 m) for the site. Cores are recorded as separate child events EYO5021 and EYO5022. At the first location seven cores (1a-1g) were taken by placing the corer into the hole created by the previous core. There was some overlap between the cores, which may have been caused by the second core being taken at a slightly different angle to the first, or as a result of collapse into the core hole. At the second location only one core (2a) was taken from a depth of 90 mm. Each core was wrapped in cling film and foil and stored in guttering pipes. The cores were transported to the laboratory where they were refrigerated until further analysis was undertaken.
