Description

A watching brief was undertaken on a new services trench in an alley located just outside the city walls adjacent to Monk Bar, York. The area lies within an Area of Archaeological Importance. The watching brief was undertaken on 24-26/2/2016. The services trench was a maximum of 0.94m wide and 0.95m deep, and was located between 0.6m and 1.57m south-east of the north-eastern property boundary for the site. Overall the trench was on a north-west to south-east alignment, having a slight dog-leg bend in the central portion, and changing alignment for a second time to the immediate south-east of the newly built houses located at the northern end of the trench. All of the deposits observed during the watching brief clearly post dated 1750, and most were of modern date relating to the insertion of services for the various buildings in the area. Nothing of archaeological interest was observed.
