Description

An archaeological investigation was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd at St. Peter’s School, Westminster Road, York, during the construction of an extension of an existing playground area, the formation of 2 no. sports court and installation of a free standing pergola structure. The investigation was commissioned to satisfy the requirements of planning permission for the development (Planning Application Reference 19/00699/FUL). Across the majority of the site groundworks did not penetrate to a sufficient depth to encounter archaeological deposits. In limited areas the archaeology was at a shallower depth and was therefore exposed. Archaeological features included a small area of cobbling, possibly representing the remains of a Roman structure, together with a probably medieval or post-medieval ditch. These features were encountered at the basal limit of excavation so, after recording in plan, were preserved in-situ beneath the development. Therefore the development has been carried out without any damage occurring to significant archaeological deposits.
