Description

The study area focussed on the existing roundabout where the A1237 York Northern Outer Ring Road crosses the unclassified north-south aligned Strensall Road. This roundabout lies between housing developments on the north side of Huntington and the south side of Earswick. The study area is formed by a curving rectangle, measuring approximately 0.53km wide by 1.26km long, corresponding to a distance of 200m from the A1237. A total of 11 non-designated archaeological sites or assets were identified within the defined study area. Most are areas of extant or former ridge and furrow, two are the sites of demolished buildings, Earswick Hall and Ilford House, and another is a short section of the River Foss Navigation. One site covers an area of recent archaeological investigation to the east of Strensall Road south of the A1237.
