Excavation between 1961-1963 in the rectory garden to the NW of the church. In 1967 two further trenches were excavated 4m north of the main site in an area then known as Florence Row. The work was undertaken by students of St Johns College and members of the York Excavation Group under Peter Wenham. A substantial Roman stone building (possibly 18m x 16m) was revealed (not completely). It is difficult to determine the original plan from the walls which were excavated although parts of 2 large rooms were found with an additional apse. The walls survived to 6 cources and were thick enough to support a single storey stone superstructure. The post-Roman sequences and deposits were difficult to interpret there is likley important evidence here for the last years of the 4th century and the change in urban order at that time.
