Description
Between the 18th May and the 17th July 2020 York Archaeological Trust conducted an evaluation and Borehole survey exercise at York Central development, York (NGR SE 5920 5190.) The works involved the excavation and recording of recording of 58 evaluation trenches, 27 window sample boreholes and the updating of the deposit model.
The evaluation trenches revealed the presence of archaeological remains ranging in date from Roman to modern. Notable discoveries included a Roman inhumation burial and evidence of large-scale landscaping efforts associated with the 19th century development of the railways. The purposive geoarchaeological window sample survey and subsequent updating of the site deposit model identified several key features, including evidence for a large, crescent-shaped depression across the eastern extent of the site containing organic deposits and in-situ alluvial sedimentation associated with Holgate Beck. The organic deposits have been provisionally dated to the prehistoric period.
