Description
In March 2021 York Archaeological Trust conducted an archaeological desk-based study
at the site of the Mecca Bingo site, Fishergate, York.
The study indicates that the site was used from the Roman period onwards. Excavated features
at the site include part of a Roman cemetery together with traces of Roman settlement
including field boundaries and roads, the remains of an Anglian settlement, a small number of
Anglo-Scandinavian features, remains relating to the medieval priory of St Andrew, postmedieval
agricultural deposits and boundary walls, and features relating to buildings of 18th
century and later date. The site is clearly of archaeological significance for the Anglian period,
as remains of this date are rare within York as a whole.
