Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at 26 Marygate, York, during the development of five new residential properties and conversion of a 19th century warehouse. The watching brief investigation revealed a series of soil horizons probably dated to between the late medieval to post-medieval/early modern periods. Within the deepest groundworks required for the development these deposits were observed to a depth of 2.2m below ground level (c.13.8m AOD). The remainder of deposits recorded during the investigation were associated with development of the area during the early modern and modern periods. The natural deposits were not encountered during the investigation and the groundworks were insufficient in depth to encounter any archaeological deposits of a Roman date known to survive within the area. No medieval structural remains, such as those recorded during the previous evaluation of the site, were observed.
