Description

Three trenches of varying sizes were excavated both in the courtyard and within the garden area at the rear of the property. The underlying natural geology was not reached. The groundworks that took place at 11A Castlegate did not show any significant archaeological deposits. Whilst some modern deposits at the base of these excavations may have presented some residual archaeological finds, evidence for archaeological remains are scant. It is more likely that these finds, including pottery sherds, were previously disturbed and interred at unknown dates by drainage works rather than being undisturbed deposits. Overall, thecontets identified were likely modern in nature, relating to retrofitting sewage, drainage works additions to the building itself, and garden activity.
