Description

An archaeological investigation was carried out by On Site Archaeology in May 2023 at 43 Stonegate, York. The investigation comprised the archaeological excavation of two small trenches to inform the project structural engineer about potential ground conditions. The works were required to assist in the design of new supports for the existing cellar roof and overlying public pavement. Both of the trenches revealed probably Roman archaeological deposits at a depth of c. 0.30m below the existing cellar floor. These were directly overlain by early modern deposits associated with the construction of the existing cellar. Following inspection of the two trenches and the cellar walls by the structural engineer it was determined that no further below ground works would be required to provide a suitable system of structural support.
