Description

Archaeological monitoring took place during the excavation of three test pits for the sewer diversion works on the IP2 inf rastructure site between December 2022 and January 2023. Each test pit was up to c.3.5m long and c.0.9m wide. TP3 contained rubble associated with the former Wagin works to a depth of 2m below ground level. TP4 and 5 contained an identicle sequence, consisting of alluvial deposits at c.2.4m BGL - 3.1m BGL / c.11.10m AOD - 9.35m AOD, overlain by a c.1m thick buried soil and c. 1.4m - 2m thick make=up deposit relating to the railway activity across the site. These data ppints contributed useful information for the emerging deposit model, suggesting the presence of a ridge of higher ground that may contribute to localised organic preservation and a later date for the organic buried soil than previously thought. No archaeological deposits of significance were encountered.
